According to the latest research, cumin powder can promote weight loss, reduce body fat, and decrease the levels of bad cholesterol. A study conducted at Iran`s Shahid Sadoughi University have showed that individuals who consumed 1 teaspoon of cumin powder a day have lost weight three times faster than those who were on the same diet, but without taking cumin powder.
This study involved 88 overweight or obese women who were divided into 2 groups. Both groups received nutrition assessment and counseling and reduced their daily calorie intake by 500 for a period of 3 months.
One group was also fed in 3 grams (less than a teaspoon) of cumin powder on daily basis, mixed in 5 ounces of yogurt. The control group also consumed the same amount of yogurt, but without cumin.
At the end of the trial, participants who consumed cumin had lost 3 more pounds when compared to the control group for a total of 13 pounds weight loss. Moreover, the participants from the cumin group experienced reduced body fat by 14.64%, which is almost the triple the 4.91% fat loss of the control group, thanks to the fat-burning spice.
There were other health benefits as well. Regular cumin consumption decreased the LDL cholesterol levels by nearly 10 points. The control group lost only half a point in the same category.
Cumin is loaded with phytosterols, natural plant compounds which have the ability to inhibit the absorption of cholesterol in the body. Although this is the first research which has proved the fat-burning properties of cumin, scientists also believe that cumin along with the other hot spices can increase the metabolic rate as well.
