Sleep is extremely important for good health. But the new study shows that sleep in a cold room significantly improves our health.
Cooler bedroom could subtly transform our brown adipose tissue in greater energy consumption and metabolism, even in the daytime.
This is very important because brown fat as opposed to the familiar white fat is metabolically active. Experiments done with mice have shown that it is necessary to throw out the sugar from the bloodstream to start burning calories and regulating the internal temperature of the body.
Similar is the process in humans. A new study, published by the American Diabetes Association, in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health, researched the influence of climatic conditions of the bedrooms which slept five young men volunteers over several months.
Guys in the day lived their usual life, but returned at night to sleep in the institute. All meals, including lunch were insured in order to correct calorie intake. They slept under sheets lightweight ventilated.
During the first month, the researchers held the room temperature 24˚, believing that the neutral temperature will trigger a reaction of the body.
Next month, the temperature of the room was reduced to 19˚, which researchers thought that will begin to stimulate brown adipose tissue (but that will cause flicker – muscles automatically contract to cause the release of heat, which is otherwise standard reaction at lower temperatures).
Next month, the temperature of the room was again increased to 24˚, to disrupt all the effects of the cold room, and finally, last month increased the temperature of 27˚.
During the experiment, blood sugar, insulin levels and daily intake of calories were regularly monitored and also then measured every month and the amount of brown fat.
To create healthy brown adipose tissue requires proper operation of the endocrine system and proper nutrition. On the left side of the photo you see the places that create brown fat, and the right places are marked with unwanted white fat or bad fat.
The cold temperature, as this study showed, significantly changed their body. What is most surprising, after several weeks sleeping at a temperature of 19˚, almost doubled the volume of their brown fat. Their insulin sensitivity, which is affected by changing the blood sugar, was improved.
Brown fat or good fat is one of the main factors of our metabolic system, if we eat proper food and if we sleep in a cold room.
“These are healthy young men, but the very fact that sleeping in a cold room gained metabolic advantages over others, and it could in time reduce their risk for diabetes and other metabolic problems.
Also they spent a few calories during sleep in a cold room (but not so much to result in weight loss for those few months). Metabolic improvements are canceled after only a few days sleeping at a temperature of 27˚.
The message from these studies, as Cheli says is:
“To strongly encourage your metabolism, lower the temperature a few degrees in your bedrooms. My room temperature and also the temperature in my office has a benefit – shortened the meetings. Obviously that reducing the temperature of our environment improves certain mechanisms that have not been written much about. ”
Sleep in a cold room and shower with cold water creates a continuous increase in the internal temperature of the body that contributes to strengthening our immune system and accelerate metabolism, especially in times when relaxing (sleeping or showering and bathing).
